Situation
A national health service provider needed patient-facing notifications and reminders inside WordPress, not a bolt-on messaging product. Editors needed templates they could trust, a sane way to build personalised health messages, and block-editor workflows that did not fight Gutenberg. Operations needed visibility into usage, bulk options for announcements, and security controls that matched the sensitivity of health data.
What we focused on
- Core notification system: Multi-channel delivery via SMS and email; template management by type (notification, reminder, custom); clinical checklist integration including built-in content selection with configurable options where programmes required it.
- Smart message generator: Conversational five-step flow for personalised health notifications, with structure that keeps tone appropriate and reduces copy-paste errors.
- Block editor integration: Native blocks, live previews of forms and components in the editor, template selection from block settings, and multiple block types (notification forms, message generator, clinical checklist, recipient and sender fields).
- Customization and branding: Broad colour system for brand alignment, responsive layouts, CSS variable injection with sensible fallbacks, and progress indicators for multi-step forms.
- Admin experience: Dashboard for usage, templates, and analytics; user reminder preferences and profile integration; bulk messaging to registered users; system health monitoring with alert thresholds.
- Security and compliance: Rate limiting and IP-based protections, validation and sanitisation throughout, WordPress nonces, and careful handling of personal health information.
Outcome
Teams could compose and ship notification experiences from the block editor, operations had a single place to monitor health and traffic, and security-sensitive behaviour was explicit rather than scattered across ad hoc theme code.
